Preventive Care

Preventing tooth decay and gum disease starts with the patient. Proper homecare is essential. Most people do not realize the proper way to brush and floss. We are also over whelmed with added sugar to almost every item in our diet. The first step in our office is education. Each patient must understand their responsibility how to brush properly for two to three minutes morning and night, flossing daily and limiting sugar exposures. Second, periodic dental exams, x-rays, and cleanings allow us to identify problems early. A simple cavity left untreated can turn into more serious problems such as extraction or root canal.

A toothpaste containing fluoride is essential in reducing dental decay. Fluoride helps repair and strengthen the tooth thereby preventing the progression of dental decay. The simply act of brushing works to remove the plaque and apply the fluoride to the tooth surface. Flossing removes plaque from in between the teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach.

Dental cleanings remove hardened plaque called calculus from your teeth and under your gums. Calculus or sometimes referred to as “tarter” is a hardened mineral deposit on your teeth that cannot be remove from brushing or flossing.  A dental hygienist uses special instruments to remove the build up from your teeth. Tarter is irritating to your gums and promotes the progression of gum disease.  Patients often notice bleeding gums when brushing or flossing as the first symptom. Gum disease left untreated can result in the loss of the supporting structures of the teeth including the bone.
